Delegation Model of Care

Under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), Registered Nurses (RNs) play a pivotal role in delegating and supervising care for participants requiring disability-related health supports. This process, known as ‘delegation and supervision of care,’ allows RNs to train qualified support workers or Enrolled Nurses (ENs) to perform specific health-related tasks, ensuring participants receive appropriate and safe support.

Key aspects of RN delegation under the NDIS include:

Assessment and Care Planning: RNs conduct comprehensive health assessments to develop individualized care plans tailored to each participant’s unique needs.

Training and Competency: RNs are responsible for training support workers or ENs in specific tasks, ensuring they possess the necessary skills and knowledge to perform delegated duties safely and effectively.

Supervision and Accountability: Even after delegation, RNs maintain responsibility for the care provided. They offer ongoing supervision, both direct and indirect, to ensure the quality and safety of the services delivered.

Delegation Criteria: Not all tasks can be delegated. RNs must evaluate the complexity and stability of the participant’s condition to determine if delegation is appropriate. Tasks involving inconsistent or rapidly changing health needs may require direct RN involvement.

This program facilitates safe access to community services by providing RN-led assessments, care planning, training, and supervision of support workers.

It’s essential to recognize that while RNs can delegate certain tasks, they cannot delegate the overall responsibility of care. They must ensure that any delegated task is within the support worker’s or EN’s scope of practice and that appropriate supervision is available.

In summary, the NDIS framework empowers RNs to delegate specific health-related tasks to trained individuals, promoting efficient and personalized care for participants. However, RNs retain ultimate responsibility, ensuring that all delegated tasks are performed safely and effectively.
